My initial concept was somewhat of a “sexy morse code.” As opposed to phone sex, sexting or sexy webcam vids, I want to send sexy one-way messages to my partner via my iPhone and LED lights. I want a small rectangle of LED lights to mimic what I do to my iPhone with my tongue. I can be licking the whole surface or just tonging/teasing small sections. I could also be “faking it” by just using my finger. I feel that this is somewhat more visceral than phone sex or even video chatting. It is almost a tangible representation of what I’m doing to my phone (or could be doing to him). I eventually want to show this on a much bigger scale. I will be translating my tongue messages onto incandescent infrared heat bulbs installed on a wall. While I’m not in the room (or possibly not even the same building), the lights would not only mimic my tongue’s movement, but radiate heat when they’re lit up as well. This will expose something private on a much more public scale for anyone to see and feel. This idea spawned from the fact that my phone has basically become another appendage to me. Not only do I need it to be with me at all times, it always needs to have life. Not only am I so dependent on it but because of my messages, photos, videos, and browser history, it has become a very private and intimate device. I get restless when other people search around or even borrow it. I’ve always been obsessed with touch screen phones. The movements of the fingers feel so erotic. It looks sensual to see people just rubbing and stroking their phones on the train. The tactility reminds me of how I sculpt my own ceramic pieces. I feel that the cell phone has almost become a significant other. Its size, shape, and ability to vibrate can easily be used as a vibrator. I do not use a screen cover, but I feel that if somebody else wanted to lick my phone, I would want to use “protection.” When I perform on my phone alone with my partner, it’s a more private and intimate “conversation.” The public performance would be like playing with exhibitionism. All 12 disciples are made with my dirty stoneware clay and glazed with Majolica. Jesus, pure as He was, remains unglazed. The disciples are glazed heavier as they are further from Jesus. A clear tube with red neon border frames the piece in a very visceral manner. The unglazed Jesus absorbs the halo of the light while the glaze reflects it. Everything is hung on the wall above my dining room table, upon which wine is served. This piece was inspired by the Filipino tradition of always having a painting (or in my own family’s case, a tapestry) of the Last Supper above the dining room table. Many Filipinos are Roman Catholic and even have Michelangelo’s Creation hung above their master bed. Growing up Filipino in America and being raised Mormon, I’ve always found this tradition to be very intriguing. I am fascinated with how one generation’s superstitions and rituals can be laughed about, yet at the same time cherished, by the next. Its still in its development stage, but I am fascinated with the idea of a masturbating robot. The purpose of a robot is to serve people, but in this case, it would be incredibly self-serving…but is it really serving itself if it does not feel anything? If it feels no euphoria how does it peak? How do you know when it’s done? How is the viewer part of the piece? Who is the pervert? If there is no viewer to witness the act, is the piece complete? Is he proud or is this some kind of shaming machine? This idea came about after a Pinocchio piece I finished. A child-sized Pinocchio sits on a stroller with his hand on his crotch, looking up and smiling. The viewer is invited to “turn him on” by flipping a switch suggestively located where his genitals would be. What I’ve noticed with interactive or loud work, there is a moth-to-flame mentality. Everyone wants to try it, even if it is touching the suggested genital of a child. Once he's "turned on," he starts masturbating loud and furiously which draws attention.
